Search for runner to continue with trained volunteers only

Published: July 12, 2012

Organizers of a search for missing Mount Marathon runner Michael LeMaitre say they won't use untrained volunteers Friday because of hazardous conditions on the mountain.

"Conditions on the mountain are deteriorating and many areas are unsafe," Seward Fire Department spokeswoman Janice Melvin said in a release Thursday.

Only trained technical teams will be allowed to join in the search Friday, according to the release.

On Thursday, more than a dozen searchers continued to canvass three areas of the mountain looking for LeMaitre, according to the Seward Fire Department.

LeMaitre, 66, disappeared during the men's Mount Marathon race on July 4.

He is presumed to be the first race fatality since the contest began in 1915.
