Dimond and South picked up first-round wins Thursday on the opening day of the BP Exploration Invitational Tournament at Mulcahy Stadium. Dimond edged Service 5-2 and South pummeled Chugiak 11-1.
The tournament gets into full swing Friday with five games. The 19th annual American Legion tournament features eight teams, including squads from Texas and Tennessee.
In its win, Dimond Post 21 scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to subdue Service Post 28.
Dimond's Dylan Lauwers struck out seven and scattered five hits for the win. Sagan Osborne finished with two hits, two runs and an RBI, Payton Lauwers drove in two runs on two hits and Jordan Clevenger belted a two-run single for the Lynx.
Service's Mike Choy and Zach Cuddihy each went 2 for 3 and drove in a run.
In South Post 4's victory, Brad Butcher drove in four runs and Matt Ilalio and Bryan Baker each scored three times to lead the Wolverines past Chugiak Post 33.
South, which led 3-0 after the first inning, blew the game open with a six-run fourth, forcing the game to end after five innings due to mercy rule. South's Conner Cucullu pitched all five innings for the win, striking out eight. Bradley Pospec and Chase Wilson notched Chugiak's only two hits.
