WORTH NOTING
The Chugiak Chinooks snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday, pouncing on the Anchorage Glacier Pilots early and riding a four-run first inning to a 7-4 win at Loretta French Field.
The Pilots (16-10), who fell back into a tie for first with the Peninsula Oilers (16-10), made things interesting. They scored twice in the fourth on back-to-back RBI-doubles from Jordan Luplow and Axel Johnson to cut the lead to 4-2. A Chris Mariscal solo homer in the fifth cut the lead to 4-3. Chugiak (11-14) held a 5-4 lead through six innings, before pulling away with two runs in the eighth.
The Anchorage Bucs and Fairbanks Goldpanners split a doubleheader at Growden Memorial Park, the Panners blowing out the Bucs 10-2 in the first game and the Bucs turning the tables with a 14-1 win in the second game.
In the first game, Goldpanners leadoff hitter Chad Carroll went 3 for 3, stole two bases and scored a run. Paul Politi drove in three, going 2 for 3, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Blake Miller (2 for 4) added a solo shot in the third inning.
The second game belonged to the Bucs after a seven-run fourth inning put them ahead 11-0. Garrett Mattlage kicked off the onslaught with a two-run home run, with Zach Esquerra and Zach Mathieu each hitting two-run homers in the inning as well.
Collin Ferguson (4 for 5) blasted a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to put the Bucs ahead 14-1.
