Families with students entering the Anchorage School District for the first time in grades 1-12 will be able to enroll all of their students at one location next week.

The early enrollment event was tried last year and more than 300 new-to-the-district families took part, according to the ASD.

"Before that, if you had an elementary student, a middle school student and a high school student, you would have had to go to three different schools to enroll them," said Heidi Embly of the ASD Communications Department.

The process for enrolling a first time student is more complicated than for ASD students who were enrolled last year and are returning this year, Embly said.

"If you were in school last year, you don't need all the paperwork," she said.

Among the items required to complete enrollment, parents must bring:

• Proof of residency (such as a utility or phone bill or lease agreement).

• The children who are going to be registered.

• Current official record of immunization, including: diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus; polio; measles, mumps and rubella; hepatitis A and B; varicella, also known as chickenpox (two doses required for grades K-6).

Immunizations will be available at the upcoming event. Families can also find out about bus routes, school counseling services and other district and school resources. Parents will also be shown how to log online to the ASD site that lets them look up student information like grades and homework, pay for school lunches via credit card, change contact information and more, Embly said.

Interpreters and English Language Learner testing will be available.

The process should take about two hours.

Kindergartners will not be registered at the event. Students going into kindergarten or returning to the district should enroll at their individual schools during the regular enrollment period, the week of Aug. 6.

The first day of class will be Aug. 22 for grades 2-12 and Aug. 29 for grades K-1.

The early registration event will take place at the ASD Education Center, 5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd., at the intersection with Boniface Parkway, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 24 and 25, 4-7 p.m. July 26 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 28.
