J.R. Richard, a flame-throwing Houston Astros pitcher who twice lead the National League in strikeouts before a stroke derailed his career, will appear at Don's Sportscards at 1 p.m. Saturday. Richard played for the Astros from 1971-80, beginning his Major League career two years out of high school. In 1980, at age 30, he suffered a stroke before a game. Emergency surgery removed a blood clot from his neck and saved his life, but his career was over.
He owns the Astros record for strikeouts in a season (313 in 1979) and tallied 1,493 career strikeouts.
Don's Sportscards is at 9900 Old Seward Highway.
