Sanders holds slim lead in Alaska Am golf tournament

Anchorage Daily NewsJuly 20, 2012

Greg Sanders retained his lead in the Alaska State Amateur golf tournament, but his pursuers are closer than ever going into Saturday's third round.

Sanders fired a 3-over-par 75 Friday at the Moose Run Creek Course for a 36-hole total of 145.

One stroke back at 146 is defending champion David Hamilton, who fired a 73 Friday. Two strokes back at 147 is Paul Blanche, who carded an even 72 for Friday's lowest score.

In all, just eight of the 26 players in the men's championship flight broke 80 on the unforgiving Creek Course.

While things are getting heated in the men's competition, Terri McAngus is threatening to blow away the women's competition.

McAngus, the defending champion, shot 75 for the second straight day for a two-day total of 150. That puts her 11 strokes ahead of Rose Pelletier, who faded from contention with an 83 after shooting a first-round 78.

After two rounds at Moose Run, action moves to Settlers Bay in Knik for the final rounds of the tournament Saturday and Sunday.
