Bucs' Compton named ABL's Player of the Year

Anchorage Daily NewsJuly 22, 2012

Chase Compton, who hit better than .400 for the Anchorage Bucs this summer, is the Alaska Baseball League's Player of the Year.

Compton, who will be a junior at University of Louisiana in Lafayette, hit .408 in 35 games this summer. He drove in 31 runs and belted six home runs, three triples and 11 doubles.

Compton was one of two Bucs to pick up major awards in honors announced Sunday by the league.

Braden Shipley, a relief pitcher from the Unviersity of Nevada, was named Top Prospect. He has six saves, 21 strikeouts in 13 innings and a 2.77 ERA.

Peninsula Oilers shortstop Alex Staehely was the Gold Glove winner and Compton was the Silver Slugger winner.

The league-leading Anchorage Glacier Pilots placed five players on the ABL's all-league first team, also announced Sunday. The Bucs and Oilers boasted four apiece, the Mat-Su Miners had two and the Fairbanks Goldpanners and Chugiak Chinook had one apiece.

Eight days remain in the ABL season. Teams took a break from league action Sunday for the annual home run derby and all-star game at Mulcahy Stadium, where the Bucs' Zach Mathieu won the home run derby and the North squad -- made up of players from the Goldpanners, Miners and Chinooks -- beat the South team 6-4.
