Chena Hot Springs gets preliminary deal to expand

Published: July 24, 2012

FAIRBANKS -- A deal in the works for nine years will allow Chena Hot Springs to expand.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports the Fairbanks North Star Borough's Land Management Office has signed an agreement with Chena Hot Springs owner Bernie Karl to sell about 1,400 acres of borough land south of the resort.

There are several steps yet in the process, including Assembly approval. However, officials say the deal could be completed by the end of the year.

Karl will pay fair market value for the land, which hasn't been appraised yet.

Part of the expansion plans call for an Alaska wildlife park and a ski slope with artificial snow.
