Alcohol-fueled gunplay led to soldier's death, police say

FAIRBANKS -- A criminal complaint contains details in the death of a Fort Wainwright soldier who was shot in the head.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that the complaint says a loaded pistol in the hands of a highly intoxicated soldier led to the death of 19-year-old Jawaun Collins.

Twenty-one-year-old Joshua Jordan Corona is being held without bail at Fairbanks Correctional Center on a charge of second-degree murder. Sunday's shooting occurred in a south Fairbanks apartment.

Corona reported the shooting but initially told police Collins accidentally shot himself. Two witnesses came forward with a different account. They said Corona was carrying a pistol when he put the gun to Collins' head and pulled the trigger. Corona says he thought the pistol was not loaded.

He was arraigned Tuesday.
