Young Kwethluk man drowns after boat runs out of gas

Published: July 25, 2012

A 24-year-old Kwethluk man drowned after his boat ran out of gas on a trip home from Bethel Tuesday afternoon, according to Alaska State Troopers.

George Maxie and his girlfriend were traveling through Napaskiak Slough when the gas tank ran dry and water partially swamped the boat, troopers said. Another boater picked up the girlfriend, and Maxie stayed with his boat, troopers said.

The girlfriend told authorities that Maxie hadn't made it back to Kwethluk, and troopers found him drowned Wednesday in the slough.

Troopers said alcohol played a role in the death.
