King salmon that have returned from the ocean to Ship Creek are held in a raceway during an eggtake at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery in Anchorage on Tuesday, July 31, 2012. They will be used as broodstock to enhance the sport fishing opportunities at Ship Creek, Eklutna Tailrace, Seward, and the Prince William Sound communities of Whittier, Cordova, and Valdez. They also stock area lakes with catchable-sized king salmon for ice fishing. The hatchery also collects broodstock at the Ninilchik River, Crooked Creek, and Deception Creek where the king salmon returns have been poor and will result in falling short of the target broodstock needs at those locations.
