FAIRBANKS -- A Fairbanks hunter has been cited for illegally killing a large grizzly bear.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says 37-year-old Rickey Currie of Fort Wainwright admitted he shot the bear at a bait station off the Dalton Highway because it was shaking his tree stand while he was in it.
Department of Fish and Game biologist Tony Hollis became suspicious after Currie brought the bear's skull and hide in to be sealed. Currie had said he shot the bear in June after seeing its tracks and then stalking it west of the highway to where he shot it.
A trooper went to Currie's two bait stations to investigate. At one, the trooper found a large amount of fresh blood, brown bear hair and drag marks.
