FAIRBANKS -- Fairbanks voters will decide whether the borough can regulate air pollution.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports a group led by state Rep. Tammie Wilson, R-North Pole, has turned in enough signatures to get the issue on the October ballot.

An initiative was passed in 2010 but still allowed the borough to regulate. The Assembly ultimately required newly installed stoves to be clean-burning designs and didn't allow chemically treated wood, garbage or railroad ties to be burned.

Wilson says she believes the borough should not regulate air quality since that's a function of the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The News-Miner says the DEC prefers the issue to be handled locally.

The federal government has given Fairbanks, which struggles with winter air pollution, until 2014 to meet air quality standards.
