Man shot by trooper in July re-arrested after new incident

A suspected drug dealer trying to escape police Wednesday in West Anchorage grabbed control of an SUV in which he was riding as a passenger and smashed it into police vehicles and another car, police said.

Police captured the man, 35-year-old Anchorage resident Albert Samoa Maifea, a short time after the collisions near Northern Lights Boulevard and Minnesota Drive.

Maifea, shot in July after allegedly brandishing a gun at an Alaska state trooper near Wasilla, was out on bail and arrested on a score of new charges, including felony drug misconduct, eluding and assault.

It was a little after 4 p.m. Wednesday when troopers and Anchorage police tried to stop a Honda SUV carrying Maifea, driven by his 33-year-old girlfriend, Rose Satele, said police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker.

"He wrested control of the vehicle from her," Parker said. "He was in the passenger seat, reached over her and got his foot on the pedal."

Three undercover police cruisers and a private citizen's vehicle were damaged, Parker said.

"It rammed them and there was major damage to our cars, including one that was hit head-on," he said.

Officers found what they believe to be methamphetamine in the SUV and a stolen handgun, the police spokesman said.

None of the officers or troopers was hurt; nor was the other motorist, Parker said. Maifea complained of pain -- not from the wreck but from the July 4 shooting by a trooper south of Wasilla, Parker said.

"When asked if he was injured, he said he still had pain from the bullet," Parker said.

Troopers said that Maifea was speeding on the Parks Highway on July 4 and failed to comply with a traffic stop. He drove a red 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix faster than 100 mph before ditching it and running on Fairview Loop, troopers said.

Maifea brandished a handgun and the trooper shot him, a troopers spokeswoman said. He was hospitalized and later charged with assault, reckless driving and failing to stop at the direction of a police officer.

Court records show Maifea posted bail and left jail July 19.
