Kenai Post 20 surrendered six runs in the first inning and 11 in the first four innings Thursday, falling 12-2 in eight innings to Waipahu, Hawaii, in an opening-round baseball game at the American Legion Northwest Regional in Billings, Mont.
The Hawaiians, who won by the mercy rule when they scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to gain a 10-run lead, racked 16 hits and received two RBIs each from four different players.
Jacob Darrow, Josiah Covey and Hector Rivera each went 2 for 4 for Kenai, which generated nine hits, and Covey and Rivera each drove in a run.
Hawaii starter Sumi Pruett scattered seven hits in seven innings and struck out 10.
Kenai plays its second game in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament at 7:30 a.m. ADT Friday against the Billings Royals.
