Details lacking on airman's death

Published: August 13, 2012

The airman found dead early Saturday at Six Mile Lake on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson was from Savannah, Tenn., and had been in the Air Force since December 2008, the military said Monday.

Senior Airman Brandon Cox, 22, arrived in Alaska in March 2010 and deployed to Ali Air Base in Iraq in December 2010, returning in June 2011, according to John Pennell, base spokesman.

The military released a notice of his death on Sunday but hasn't provided details on what happened. Cox, an explosive ordnance disposal technician with the 673d Civil Engineer Squadron, was found by members of the 673d Security Forces Squadron near his vehicle at the lake, the military said.

"The circumstances surrounding Senior Airman Cox's death are still under investigation," Pennell said in an e-mail. "We are working with the Anchorage Police Department and awaiting further information from the Medical Examiner's office."
