Renee Canavan thought her day of derby fishing was over when a failed transmission forced the boat she was in to return to the Valdez port early Saturday, with just one small silver in the hold.
But on the way in, she hooked the winning fish in the Valdez Women's Silver Salmon Derby -- a 15.22 pound coho.
Canavan, a community service officer in Anderson, Calif., was fishing in her fourth derby.
Second place went to a Valdez angler Amber Burton, who was fishing near Gold Creek when she caught her 14.88-pounder.
In all, 600 women competed in the one-day derby.
