JUNEAU -- The U.S. Coast Guard says a life jacket saved a man from drowning after his canoe capsized near Auke Bay.
The incident happened Monday night. The Coast Guard received a report the 43-year-old was overdue. A friend who contacted authorities said the man was working crab pots.
The Coast Guard says upon arriving at the man's last known position, rescue personnel could hear calls for help. The man was found with a crab pot line wrapped around a leg, pulling him down.
The Coast Guard, in a news release, says he was beginning to suffer from mild hypothermia and shock. The agency says the only thing keeping him afloat was his life jacket.
A Coast Guard spokesman declined to release the man's name, citing policy for cases that are closed.
