Two men were mauled by a bear while hunting near Shishmaref Monday, Alaska State Troopers say.

Raymond Weyiouanna, 42, and Dave Weyiouanna, 37, both of Shishmaref, were camping with two children in the Cape Espenberg area, according to a dispatch posted online.

They went upriver to hunt in a boat, encountering a bear at a shallow place in the water, troopers said.

The bear charged, attacking both of the adult men. They were able to scare off the bear and return to Shishmaref, where they were both treated at the village clinic for injuries and released, troopers said.

AST trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters said she didn't know what type of bear it was. Black bears are uncommon in the area. She didn't know the details of the injuries.
