GNAC honors Tanui

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference named UAA's Susan Tanui its female Athlete of the Week for cross-country running after the junior captured her second victory in two races this season.

Tanui's victory in Hawaii led the Seawolves women to their second straight team title. UAA's men also won the team title at the Big Wave meet, racking a perfect score of 15 for the second straight week.

UAA is idle until the Western Washington Classic in Bellingham on Oct. 6. That meet prefaces the GNAC meet in Monmouth, Ore., on Oct. 20.

Novakovich, Sullivan win

Matt Novakovich, who in July won Mount Marathon for the first time, wrapped up his mountain-running season Saturday by making 12 ascents of the North Face hiking trail to win the Alyeska Climbathon in Girdwood.

Novakovich's total gave him 24,000 feet of climbing. Brian Harder made 11 climbs of the 2,000-foot ascent from the base of the tram to the top to take second place and Todd Borke's 11 ascents placed him third.

Briana Sullivan made 10 ascents to win the women's title, with runner-up Tiffanie Novakovich and Bree Donovan also completing 10 climbs.
