Ballot Measure 1 holds its lead as deadline arrives

Ballot Measure 1 was retaining its lead as the deadline approached for counting overseas primary ballots.

Division of Elections officials say ballots will be counted throughout the day.

Wednesday was the deadline for overseas ballots.

Ballot Measure 1 would make it legal for local governments to exempt the first $50,000 worth of a homeowner's property from taxes. Approval was ahead Wednesday morning by 294 votes.

Sen. Bettye Davis of Anchorage had a 137-vote lead over former state Rep. Harry Crawford in the Democratic primary for Senate District M.

In House District 40, Benjamin Nageak of Barrow led Greta Schuerch of Kiana by 67 votes.
