Fla. man charged with oil spill claims fraud

MIAMI (AP) - A South Florida man is facing federal fraud charges after allegedly filing false claims for thousands of dollars with the BP oil spill fund.

Prosecutors said Friday that 31-year-old Jean Mari Lindor of Homestead was is charged with several counts of mail, wire and access device fraud. Lindor is being held without bail and court records didn't list an attorney for him.

According to court records, Lindor filed papers with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility falsely saying he had worked for a Florida Keys business and had lost income because of the 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He allegedly sought a combined $37,000 on his claims.

The charges carry maximum sentences that could total decades in prison.
