Man dies after falling from mountain during goat hunt

September 16, 2012

CORDOVA -- Alaska State Troopers said a 38-year-old Cordova man died after falling during a goat hunt in the Prince William Sound area.

KTUU reported Jay Hammerbacher was hunting in Wells Bay with a friend when he fell from a mountain Saturday.

Troopers said Hammerbacher's hunting partner, Lance Uselm, climbed over to check on him. Uselm and another hunting party confirmed that Hammerbacher was dead.

Because of high winds, troopers could not reach the body by helicopter Saturday, and were waiting for a break in the weather to retrieve Hammerbacher's body.
