Military personnel plan to recover a fighter jet's fuel pod found in mud off the Port of Anchorage.

Officials from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson say in a release that they are researching how and when the fuel tank wound up mostly buried in mud and silt about 75 feet from a rocky bank at the downtown Anchorage port.

It's from an F-4 Phantom fighter, an aircraft in service from 1958 to 1996.

Base personnel will attempt to snag the tank in a net early Tuesday morning during low tide and pull it to shore. If successful, a crane will move it to a transport trailer.

The 20-foot long fuel tank is cracked and likely filled with mud, which would increase its weight 10 times from the normal 250 pounds.
