Teen hunter accidentally shoots her sister

Published: September 18, 2012

Alaska State Troopers say an 18-year-old Savoonga woman accidentally shot her sister in both legs near Unalakleet.

Troopers say 27-year-old Janine Iknokinok of Unalakleet sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the mishap reported Friday.

Troopers say Iknokinok and her sister, Dinah Toolie, had been moose hunting and their four-wheeler ran out of gas outside the village on the way back.

According to troopers, the sisters decided to walk back to Unalakleet and Toolie picked up their rifle and accidently pulled the trigger.

Troopers say the round went through the back of both of Iknokinok's legs.

Some men saw the women soon after and transported them to the Unalakleet clinic.

Iknokinok later was flown to Anchorage for more treatment.
