A 48-year-old woman died Friday night after being struck by a pickup truck on the Richardson Highway outside of North Pole, Alaska State Troopers report.

The woman was identified as Verna Beattus of Fairbanks.

Beattus was walking in the right lane of an unlit stretch of the highway, troopers said.

A Ford pickup driven by James Sullivan, 65, of Fairbanks hit the woman, troopers said. Sullivan told troopers he was looking in his left side mirror at a vehicle that was passing him. Then he felt the impact.
