Hunter presumed drowned in swollen creek

Published: September 25, 2012

Alaska State Troopers say a hunter is presumed drowned after he attempted to cross a creek swollen after heavy rain.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters identified the man Tuesday morning as 51-year-old Bart Barnes of Wasilla.

Troopers took a call Monday morning from a group of hunters stranded by high water at Butte Creek near Mile 80 Denali Highway.

The caller said Barnes attempted to cross Butte Creek on an all-terrain vehicle but was swept downstream.

A trooper helicopter dispatched from Fairbanks could not locate Barnes along the creek or the Susitna River.
