Search for boaters missing on Norton Sound called off

Published: September 28, 2012

The Coast Guard has ended its search in Norton Sound for two people missing on a trip from Koyuk to Unalakleet.

Forty-one-year-old David Slwooko and 48-year-old Debra Kimoktoak were aboard the 17-foot skiff.

KINY-radio reports the boat was found on a beach 35 miles southwest of Unalakleet but there was no sign of Slwooko and Kimoktoak.

They had left Koyuk on Monday afternoon and were expected in Unalakleet that night. Searching began Tuesday.

A Coast Guard C-130 from Kodiak and a helicopter that had been deployed to Barrow helped scan the sound. The Cutter Bertholf was also sent to the area.
