Troopers investigate homicide in Metlakatla; suspect in custody

Anchorage Daily NewsSeptember 29, 2012

Alaska State Troopers say they're investigating a homicide in the community of Metlakatla, in far Southeast Alaska on Annette Island.

Police in Metlakatla told troopers about the suspicious death of Leona Meely, 67, at a home about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, troopers said. Troopers from Ketchikan and Klawock flew to Metlakatla and were still there Saturday night.

A suspect was in custody late Saturday, said troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters. Peters refused to name the suspect, nor would she say why the death was considered suspicious or how Meely died.

"We have to preserve the integrity of our investigation," Peters said. "We have identified a suspect, and they are currently detained, but we can't release the name until they're charged."

Peters said troopers were working with a local district attorney to have charges filed by Saturday night.
