FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- A Fairbanks militia member is appealing his conviction on federal weapons charges.

Thirty-eight-year-old Coleman Barney was convicted in June of conspiracy to possess unregistered silencers and grenades.

He also was convicted of possessing an unregistered 37mm projectile launcher loaded with an anti-personnel round that contained rubber pellets.

He was sentenced last month to five years in prison.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports Barney two days after sentencing filed paperwork with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Barney's appeal brief is due Dec. 26 and the government's response is due Jan. 25.
