UAA volleyball team racks up GNAC win against Seattle Pacific

The UAA volleyball team put up a big block to thwart a Seattle Pacific comeback Thursday night in Seattle, a place the Seawolves rarely win.

Breanne Sytnyk and Jodi Huddleston each had a hand in six blocks to help UAA to a 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 13-25, 15-12 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

It was UAA's first win at the Falcons' gymnasium since 2009 and its sixth in 20 matches.

The win kept UAA (11-5 overall, 6-2 GNAC) in the hunt for the league lead. The Seawolves are in third place, behind co-leaders Western Washington and Central Washington.

The Seawolves threatened to end things swiftly by winning the first two sets, but Seattle Pacific rallied to send things to a fifth set. Julia Mackey sealed the victory by scoring match point with her 13th kill of the night.

While Mackey was the only hitter in double figures for UAA, Cailin Fellows ripped 19 kills to lead four players into double figures for Seattle Pacific (7-10, 4-4).

But UAA's block often deprived the Falcons. Middle blockers Sytnyk and Huddleston led the way, but four others tallied three blocks apiece to help the Seawolves outblock SPU 12-5.

Kimya Jafroudi, UAA's senior setter, turned in a great all-around match with 41 assists, 10 digs, four kills, three blocks and two aces. Siobhan Johansen led the defense with 23 digs, Sytnyk and Sarah Johnson each contributed nine kills and Huddleston chipped in eight.

UAA's next match is Saturday at Montana State-Billings.
