Eielson upends Nikiski for first state football crown in two decades

sports@adn.comOctober 13, 2012

— The Eielson Ravens won their first state football champion in two decades Saturday by beating Nikiski 27-7 in the small-school finale at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium in Chugiak.

The title is the first for the Fairbanks school since 1992, when Alaska still had just one classification for football.

The Ravens completed an undefeated season by beating last year's champion.

It was just the fifth time Eielson has played for the title. The Ravens were second in 1991 and first in 1992 while competing against all schools, and they were runnersup in 2005 and 2003 while competing among small schools.

Nikiski, the winner of small-school titles in 2001 and 2002 and again last season, finished with a 7-2 record.
