ANCHORAGE — Anchorage police say a car hit and killed a man after he walked into traffic early Saturday morning on Tudor Road at its intersection with Arctic Boulevard.

A witness called 911 about 1:30 a.m. People at the intersection told officers they saw the man walking south on Arctic, ignoring a signal telling him not to cross, police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said. The witnesses said a Honda sedan driving west on Tudor had a green light when it hit the pedestrian in a crosswalk, Parker said.

"He was declared deceased at the scene," Parker said. "He was hit pretty bad."

Police have not released the man's name as they continue attempts to contact his family. Contacted midday Saturday, Parker said he did not yet know the name of the young man driving the Honda.

"He was shaken up, obviously, but he stuck around. He did the right thing," Parker said.

The intersection was closed for about two hours as officers investigated, Parker said.

On Sept. 20, a 1984 Pontiac Fiero struck and badly injured a pedestrian near Tudor and Arctic, police said. The driver of the Fiero left the scene without helping the man, 26-year-old Zachary Mohs, but a tip from a member of the public helped lead investigators to the car, police said. That investigation continues.
