Olson joins Republicans in the Senate

Anchorage Daily NewsNovember 11, 2012

A second Democrat has joined the Republican-led majority that will rule the state Senate. Sen. Donny Olson of Nome secured a seat on the powerful Finance Committee by crossing over, the Senate majority announced Sunday evening.

That brings the majority to 15 members, and leaves just five Democrats in the minority organization. If one more Democrat defects, the Senate minority will be too small to be recognized as an official minority and won't be guaranteed any committee positions or perks beyond minimal staff, under legislative rules. Already, the Democrats are guaranteed just one seat on the Finance and Resources committees.
