Random notes: Schierhorn, Woods, Keeney

Posted on November 13, 2012

Been meaning to get around to these things today:

Goaltender Eric Shierhorn of Anchorage on Sunday backstopped USA Hockey's Under-17 team to the championship of the Four Nations Tournament in Switzerland -- he made 15 saves in the 6-1 championship win over Switzerland. Schiehorn plays for Russell Stover in midget hockey in the Lower 48.

At the World Junior A Challenge in Nova Scotia, defenseman Justin Woods of Fairbanks and the USA Hockey select team earned the title Sunday with a 6-3 win over Canada West. Woods, who plays for the Lincoln Stars in the USHL and is ticketed for UAF, earned 1-1--2 totals in four tournament games.

Speaking of UAF, freshman John Keeney was named the CCHA's Goaltender of the Week after stopping 65 of 67 shots in a 1-1 tie (Ohio State got the extra point for winning the shootout) and 3-1 win on the road last weekend.

Interesting with the Nanooks is their use of three goalies so far. Senior Steve Thompson of Anchorage is 2-1-0 with a 3.00 and .897. Sophomore Sean Cahill is 2-1-1 with a 2.22 and .895. And Keeney is 1-1-1 with a 1.63 and .946.
