ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The amount of cargo passing through Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is down 25 percent.

KTUU-TV (http://is.gd/9OJqLu) says airport manager John Parrott describes the decrease as significant. But he finds it not particularly troubling. He says that's because the majority of cargo planes stopping in Anchorage aren't unloading but merely refueling.

Parrott says cargo carriers recently paid for expanding the airport's fuel system. He says they would not have done that if they were not confident of needing fuel at the Anchorage airport for a long time.

Parrott says the airport will bounce back. He says flying is faster than moving cargo by ocean-going vessels, even if that mode of transportation is cheaper.
