Charlotte bests Texas State in Great Alaska Shootout

The Charlotte 49ers scored the last 11 points of the game Thursday to pull out a 73-64 first-round win over Texas State at the Great Alaska Shootout.

Chris Braswell pumped in six of those points and finished with a game-high 18 to lead the 49ers of the Atlantic 10 conference, who remained undefeated in four games. The senior came off the bench to provide eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 27 minutes.

Brasswell was one of just two seniors to play for Charlotte, which started three freshmen and two sophomores. Pierria Henry, a 6-4 sophomore, put up a double-double for the 49ers with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Brasswell's late-game outburst was made necessary by a Texas State rally. Charlotte led 60-50 with 8:32 left but Matt Staff and Vonn Jones hit back-to-back 3-pointers to trigger a 14-2 run that put the Bobcats in the lead, 64-62, with 5:17 left.

Texas State (2-2) had multiple opportunities to expand the lead but came up empty on three Charlotte turnovers.

The string of turnovers ended for Charlotte when Braswell outwaited the defense under the basket for a bucket that tied the game at 4:06.

Texas State missed two shots on its next possession and then put Charlotte at the foul line, where the 49ers picked up a point.

J.T. Thompson, playing with a brace on his right knee, robbed the Bobcats on their next possession by plucking a Texas State pass out of the air and setting up an easy fastbreak layup for Henry, whose bucket gave the 49ers a 67-64 lead at 2:40.

Texas State was scoreless the rest of the way and missed four free throws in the final 1:49. Brasswellfinished off the Bobcats with a steal and layup that ended the game's scoring with 20 seconds left.
