Charlotte beats Oral Roberts in Great Alaska Shootout semifinal

The Charlotte 49ers are in the championship game of the Great Alaska Shootout, thanks to a balanced offense and a defense that clamped down on high-scoring Warren Niles of Oral Roberts.

Charlotte beat the Golden Eagles 72-58 in Friday's late semifinal game at Sullivan Arena to advance to Saturday's 8:30 p.m. title game against Northeastern. Oral Roberts and Hydaburg center Damen Bell-Holter will play for third place at 6 p.m. against Belmont.

Nine players scored and only two reached double figures for Charlotte (5-0). DeMario Mayfield pumped in 17 points and Chris Braswell added 11 to lead the 49ers.

But maybe the biggest contributor was sophomore Pierria Henry, a 6-foot-4 guard who had seven assists, seven points and five steals -- and was the primary defender on Niles, a senior guard who had averaged nearly 30 points in his previous three games.

Niles was heavily guarded throughout the game and even when he got a good look at the basket he didn't have his shooting touch. A night after scoring 33 points on 11 of 15 shooting in a win over Loyola Marymount, Niles managed 15 points on 6 of 16 shooting.

Bell-Holter hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds before fouling out with 6 minutes, 19 seconds left in the game.

Charlotte took control with a 12-0 run that gave the 49ers a 17-9 lead at the 11:25 mark of the first half. Oral Roberts (3-2) rallied to narrow the gap to 27-23 on a Bell-Holter free throw with a minute left in the half, but Charlotte made four trips to the foul line in the final 55 seconds to take a 31-23 halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles shot just 25.8 percent in the first half and 33.9 percent for the game, while Charlotte made 41.8 percent of its shots and took advantage of 17 Oral Roberts turnovers, nine of which came on Charlotte steals.

Shawn Glover led Oral Roberts with 18 points and Steven Roundtree added 12.
