Letter: Republicans seeking a mission could learn a lot from ‘Lincoln’

Published: November 24, 2012

As former Republicans, we were deeply moved Wednesday evening in the closing minutes of Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” as actor Daniel Day-Lewis spoke the words, long since carved in stone, of Lincoln’s timeless Second Inaugural Address.

Our emotions were a combination of gratitude that Hollywood’s finest talent had captured the greatness of our greatest president and shown the world a roadway to a better future.

Since this month’s stunning re-election of President Barack Obama and America’s repudiation of the racist undertone of today’s conservative politics, pundits have rightly said that the GOP must rediscover a mission and a message that resonates with today’s America.

No problem. Go see “Lincoln” — as many times as it takes.
