Gov. Sheffield was right on with his recommendation (Compass, Nov. 24) that Alaska build a smaller, less expensive in-state gas pipeline to serve Alaska.
The money is available and on hand, in liquid accounts. The need is great for a long-term source for natural gas in Alaska. Alaska can and should take the responsibility for building its infrastructure and providing natural resources to benefit its residents.
Canada, the Midwest and much of the U.S. don’t want Alaska’s gas. They either have their own or have plans to access natural gas in cheaper ways.
Gov. Parnell and Alaska legislators: Time to take up this good idea and make it work. 2013 would be a great year to make this recommendation a reality.
