Bluegrass shows highlight weekend at Alyeska

High Lonesome Sound

— While bluegrass festivals are the norm all over Alaska during summer, big bluegrass shows in winter can be few and far between. One of those is going down this weekend, the second annual Bluegrass Ball at the Alyeska Resort in Girdwood.

While balls maybe aren’t the most traditional places to hear roots music, High Lonesome Sound, Hot Dish, Danger Town and Hot & Awkward will heat up the dance floor – you know, because two of the bands have “hot” in the name.

The Bluegrass Ball is the first of what’s shaping up to be a busy schedule of shows during the skiing season. The resort is bringing up Great American Taxi, Young Dubliners, Potcheen and Nic Bluhm and the Gamblers in the coming months, plus concerts with local artists Brook Faulk, Rebel Blues and Nervis Rex round out the rest of December.

What: Bluegrass Ball
When: 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday
Tickets: $5 (21 and older)
