Halcro will lead Anchorage Chamber of Commerce

— The Anchorage Chamber of Commerce has a new leader. Andrew Halcro, the former state representative, one-time candidate for governor, and rental car company executive, is the chamber's new president.

Halcro, 48, will direct the chamber, the state's largest private business organization with almost 1,100 members employing about 54,000 people.

Halcro served two terms in the Alaska House, ran for governor in 2006 as an independent candidate and has served as an executive in his family's business, the Avis Alaska franchise. He also is author of an edgy political blog.

Sandra Heffern, chair of the Anchorage Chamber board of directors, said Halcro's small-business experience, background in public policy and communication skills made him the successful candidate.

He lives in the Sand Lake area. He and his wife, Vicki, have two daughters. He will start his new job in early January.

What about his blog?

"Andrew said he will discontinue his blog as he doesn't want his personal political views being mistaken for the voice of the Anchorage Chamber," organization spokesman J.J. Harrier said in an e-mail.
