UAA women hit 100 in win over BYU-Hawaii

Published: December 17, 2012

— For the second time in three nights, the Wells Fargo Sports Complex basketball scoreboard hit the century mark — this time for the UAA women.

The Seawolves shot nearly 50 percent from the field Monday night and buried a dozen shots from

3-point range to rack up a 100-68 victory over BYU-Hawaii in the AT&T Hoops Classic.

In running their record to 5-2 with the nonconference win, the Seawolves landed four players in double figures, with seniors Sasha King and Alysa Horn leading the way.

King, a 5-foot-6 point guard, poured in 27 points on 10 of 15 shooting and handed out 11 assists. Horn, a 6-0 forward, added 25 points. Both hit three of their five 3-point attempts.

UAA hit the 100-point mark with 2 minutes, 5 seconds left on freshman Jessica Madison’s layup. The Seawolves put up four shots after that, including three from long-range, but came up empty.

Two nights earlier, the UAA men’s team surpassed the 100-point barrier in a 111-81 win over Northwest Indian College of Bellingham, Wash.

The women, whose previous 100-point game came last December when they beat Chaminade 100-45, reached triple figures points thanks to 37 of 75 shooting from the field and a 14 of 15 night at the foul line. They were 12 of 28 from 3-point range.

The offensive fireworks came on the opening day of the AT&T tournament, a four-team affair that continues through Wednesday.

Among the dazzling statistics posted by the Seawolves were these: 28 assists on 37 baskets and 19 steals against 12 turnovers. King and Jenna Buchanan each totaled five steals and Horn had four. King, who entered the game ranked second in NCAA Division II with 7.7 assists per game, got help fueling the offense from Mariesha Harris, who handed out nine assists.

The damage could have been worse had it not been for BYU-Hawaii’s Brianna Jessop, who blocked five shots. Jessop added 12 points for the Seasiders (1-4), who were led by Shayla Washington’s 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Five players tallied career-high scoring total — King, Horn, Jessica Madison (13), Alli Madison (7 in her first game back after missing five with an injury) and Alyssa Hutchins (6), a Wasilla freshman who cracked the scoring column for the first time in her college career.
