Published: December 25, 2012

— Snow is expected to develop in Anchorage on Christmas Day, with up to 3 inches falling in the city - possibly mixed with sleet or rain, the National Weather Service says.

Temperatures had warmed considerably and were expected to be in the mid-20s to upper-30s in Anchorage, the weather service said. Temperatures could reach the mid-40s in East Anchorage and on the Hillside, the weather service said.

Heavier snow was forecast to the south on the eastern Kenai Peninsula, and a backcountry avalanche warning has been issued for the mountains in and around eastern Turnagain Arm and the Kenai Peninsula.
