Army says soldier found dead in JBER barracks from apparent gunshot

Published: December 25, 2012

A soldier was found dead in his barracks room at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Tuesday from an apparent gunshot wound, the Army said. The soldier wasn't identified and few details were being released.

In a brief written statement, Lt. Col. William Coppernoll, a spokesman for the Army in Alaska, said the soldier was found early Tuesday morning. He said the death is under investigation by the Army's Criminal Investigation Detachment, which, he said, is responsible for looking into all deaths on base.

The soldier hasn't been publicly identified pending notification of his next of kin, Coppernoll said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
