Alaska sports digest for Jan. 4

South and West both wrestled in two dual meets Friday at North Pole High, each picking up wins in early meets and South defeating West in a late Cook Inlet Conference dual.

South used five pins, including a 45-second victory from Dalton Sauder in the 195-pound division, to down Ketchikan 49-21.

Geno Giordano highlighted South's 52-20 win over West, pinning his opponent in 2:46 to win the 145-pound weight class.

West escaped with a 41-39 win over West Valley in an early dual, winning six of 10 contested matches.

West's Dajan Treder, Mike Hyde and Chardo Elliot all pinned their opponents, with Elliot needing 1 minute, 11 seconds to claim victory in the 160-pound division. Treder won at 120 pounds and Hyde won at 220.

South and West will compete in the John Tobin Invitational at North Pole on Saturday.

ALPINE SKIING

Coca-Cola GS a go

Alyeska Ski Resort will host the The Coca-Cola Holiday Classic giant slalom Saturday, an event that was supposed to happen last weekend, but was canceled due to poor weather conditions.

Lower mountain lifts have reopened, including Ted's Express, a new, high-speed lift that will provide access to the race venue.

The first run starts at 11 a.m., with a second run beginning at 1:30 p.m.
