Simon Fraser crushes UAA women

sports@adn.comJanuary 5, 2013

— Once the new kid on the block, Simon Fraser showed how far it has come Saturday by whipping the UAA women's basketball team 75-51 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The loss was the second in a row for the Seawolves (7-4 overall, 1-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference), who hadn't lost two straight games since February 2009. It was the first time since late in the 2005-06 season that the Seawolves have lost two straight at home.

Simon Fraser, which joined the NCAA in 2010, got big games from Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe and Kristina Collins to improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

It was a devastating beating for UAA, the winner of the last two GNAC titles. Simon Fraser raced to an 11-0 lead and built an insurmountable 43-16 halftime lead.

The Clan shot 48.2 percent from the field, with Collin hitting 6 of 10, an effort that included a 3-of-6 showing from 3-point range. UAA hit 31.1 percent of its shots.

Raincock-Ekunwe, a 6-foot-2 senior, piled up 15 rebounds to help Simon Fraser outrebound the Seawolves 44-29. She added 11 points and four assists and Collins contributed 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Point guard Sasha King led UAA with 12 points, four steals and three assists. Kylie Burns added 11 points, Jessica Madison had 10 points and Alli Madison chipped in nine points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Alysa Horn, a senior center, collected eight rebounds to move to the No. 14 spot on UAA's career rebounding list with 490.

UAA, which lost 70-60 to Western Washington on Thursday, faces its first conference road games this week. The Seawolves play Montana State-Billings on Thursday and Seattle Pacific on Saturday.
