Market Fresh: Deadline approaches for fresh crab orders

— It's the middle of winter, but things aren't slowing down at Anchorage's year-round Center Market.

"We are still going strong," says Alex Davis, one of the market co-founders and a Valley farmer.

Davis will have plenty of storage vegetables with him, along with other items at Wednesday's market at The Mall at Sears. The market is open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Davis' lineup includes carrots in four colors, golden beets, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and peanut, fingerling and blue potatoes. He also has pork chops, loin roast, roast, steaks, Italian sausage, breakfast sausage patties, spicy sausage and ground pork. Davis will also be supplying flour and cream of barley cereal from Delta.

Duane Clark says he'll have restocked supplies of goat cheese, along with locally produced honey, grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and duck, along with Alaska shrimp and scallops.

"Earthworks Farm is with us with Abeille Alaska, a line of beeswax and honey body care," he says. "Northern Lights Mushrooms brings several types of mushrooms."

Also at this week's market will be the Rempel Family Farm with three types of beets, Snow Apple turnips, daikon radish, green cabbage, stripetti squash, sugar pumpkins and 10 varieties of potatoes.

Time to order bread

For Rise & Shine Bakery fans this is the week to get your order in for the next round of fresh-from-the-oven bread.

Rise & Shine is taking orders beginning Thursday for delivery Jan. 16. All orders need to be submitted electronically by Sunday.

Kodiak tanner crab

The deadline to get in on the fresh-from-Kodiak crab action is fast approaching.

The Alaska Marine Conservation Council is offering the third year of its Catch of the Season program featuring Kodiak tanner crab. The carefully managed Kodiak tanner crab fishery only occurs once a year during a short winter season that begins Tuesday. Consumers can purchase 10- or 25-pound boxes of tanner crab.

Seafood deliveries will include "the story of your catch," a guide to share with family and friends. It tells the who, what, when, where and how of your catch as well as what the council is doing to protect the fishery for generations to come. The package includes favorite recipes from the fishermen. The highest standards of onboard handling methods are utilized by the fishermen to ensure a superior product. Orders must be placed by Tuesday and picked up by the subscriber in the designated pickup location in Kodiak, Homer or Anchorage. Crab cannot be shipped. The prices are $160 for a 10-pound box, or $375 for 25 pounds, of frozen leg clusters.
