Alaska high school sports digest: Jan. 8

— Ahead by just one point through three quarters, the Bartlett girls basketball team erupted for 20 fourth-quarter points Tuesday night in a 45-34 Cook Inlet Conference victory over visiting Chugiak.

Bartlett's Kiera Stokes, who led all scorers with 16 points, scoring 11 of those in the final eight minutes. Hannah Johnson added 14 points for the Golden Bears and Nadine Fraker chipped in 10. Stokes, Johnson and Fraker accounted for all 20 of Bartlett's fourth-quarter points.

Madison McAleavey led the Mustangs with nine points, and Sammi McMullen and Andre Samaniego each contributed eight.

 

East 78, E. River 33

Taria Page nearly outscored Eagle River by herself Tuesday, spearheading East's 78-33 victory over visiting Eagle River in a Cook Inlet Conference girls basketball game.

Page delivered 29 points.

Sam Coy led the Wolves with 11 points.

 

Dimond 82, Service 13

Dimond raced to a 26-point lead in the first quarter Tuesday, held Service to 13.2-percent shooting and blitzed the visitors, 82-13, in a Cook Inlet Conference girls basketball game.

Sierra Afoa led three Lynx in double figures with 26 points and added nine rebounds. Aminata Cole added 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Tara Thompson contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.

Alissa Nanez and Hallie Thompson each scored four points for the Cougars.

 

West 61, South 47

Shiccia Harris-Grant netted 14 points and Chanel Bookert scored 13 to lead West past South 61-47 in the CIC opener for both team Tuesday at West.

Marshala Eady pitched in 10 rebounds and eight points for West, and Taylor Murray led South with 15 points.

 

GIRLS HOCKEY

Service-East cruises

Amy Brassard and Kerianne Hansen each scored two goals and an assist Tuesday to lift Service-East to an 8-1 Cook Inlet Conference girls hockey victory over Chugiak-Eagle River at the McDonald Center.

Heather Merkouris added one goal and two helpers.

Autumn Sperry scored for Chugiak-Eagle River and Arika Mercer made 17 saves.

 

Mat-Su wins

Taylor Buness and Johnna Elkins each racked four-point games Tuesday to spark the Mat-Su Ravens to a 5-2 nonconference girls hockey victory over South-Bartlett at Ben Boeke Arena.

Buness scored two goals and added two assists. Elkins delivered one goal and three helpers. Elisa Gamez scored one goal and one assist for the Ravens, and Kadin Mulneaux added a goal to support Emma Denny's 21 saves.

Zoe Scherer made 30 saves for South-Bartlett, which received one goal and one assist from Morgan Newhouse, and a goal from Alahna Stivers-Myers.

 

BOYS HOCKEY

Service 7, E. River 3

Andrew Cummings' hat trick and two assists Tuesday helped propel the Service boys hockey team to a 7-3 Cook Inlet Conference win over Eagle River at the McDonald Center.

Karson Frisk likewise bagged a hat trick for the Cougars, who received 18 saves from Dustin Fritz.

Carter Jesiel, Michael Garrett and Brett Wood scored third-period goals for the Wolves. Justin Lopez stopped 25 shots for Eagle River.

 

South 17, Bartlett 2

Cameron Klatt and Josh Smith each bagged hat tricks Tuesday for South in a 17-2 Cook Inlet Conference boys hockey victory over Bartlett at Ben Boeke Arena.

Daniel Haider, Gavin Lubin and Jonathan Weston scored two goals each for the Wolverines.

Joel Johnson scored both Bartlett goals.

East parlayed four pins and a major decision into a 37-24 Cook Inlet Conference wrestling victory on Tuesday night.
