Wyoming has surpassed Alaska in the percentage of single young people who are men, reports The New York Times, citing census statistics. But that doesn't mean the change is noticeable in the Alaska singles scene. The drop from 2006 to 2011 was just over 1 percent, which still leaves more than 58 percent of young Alaska singles in the 18- to 34-year-old male category. The rankings are a sidebar to the NYT's story of the hassles faced by single women in North Dakota's booming oil patch (that state is the new No. 3 on the single-men chart). It's a story no doubt familiar to Alaskans who were young and single here in the 1970s and before. Though, of course -- as the Times points out -- some women know how to turn the disparity to their advantage.
